Ketamine is an exciting new option for many people seeking help for mental health issues and chronic pain. While SSRIs have become the most popular method for many disorders, from depression to neuropathy, many people don’t receive the relief they want with antidepressants. Fortunately, ketamine has shown great success where antidepressants and other conventional treatments are lacking.

Getting the Most Out of Ketamine Treatment
After your consultation with one of our board-certified MDs, you will be scheduled for six stabilization infusions over 2-3 weeks. Every infusion is under the care of a board-certified MD.
The dose is based on weight (usually 0.5-0.8 mg/kg/60 mins) and will be adjusted as needed based on response or side effects. Treatment will last for approximately 60 minutes for mood disorders and 120-180 mins for neuropathic pain conditions.
During your infusion, ketamine will work on an important neurotransmitter known as glutamate. You can think of glutamate as a traffic director for your brain and neural growth. When it is appropriately excited, this neurotransmitter can trigger new synapses to form. These synapses give your brain more opportunity to use other neurotransmitters associated with mood. And while you don’t have to do anything to receive the effects, there are a few things you can do to optimize the experience and get as much as possible out of each session.
Avoid everyday distractions with negative messaging, like social media or television with stressful or violent content. When consumed, this type of media can increase your stress levels, decrease focus, and diminish your sense of overall well-being. Eliminating these factors as much as possible will not just help you stay relaxed and focused on recovering.
An intention can be about anything. “I want to be happier,” “I’d like to be more present with my friends and family,” “May I be free from suffering,” and, “I want to worry less,” are all examples of things you may find yourself seeking from treatment. Stating these desires plainly in your mind, out loud, or in writing can help you focus on and achieve your treatment goals.
Meditation is an excellent tool for cultivating focus and activating your parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for slowing your heart rate and breathing and is generally associated with states of relaxation. There are many different types of meditation out there. Meditations intended to enhance focus or build loving kindness are especially helpful.
While none of these will make or break your treatments, they will help you take a more active role in your recovery.
What to Do After your Ketamine Treatment Session
Incorporating what you’ve learned and experienced in each treatment session can help you prepare for the next and build upon the healing you’ve already received. Setting some time aside to analyze any revelations you had and your general feelings throughout the session can solidify the benefits of ketamine. Write down your ideas and, if you can, talk them through with someone close to you, like a family member, friend, or therapist. In general, following the steps above will maximize ketamine’s effectiveness.
Remember, after receiving a ketamine treatment, your brain is undergoing a physical change. Take advantage of this opportunity to supply yourself with positive goals and affirmations about what you’re capable of and what you want to achieve.
Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
- “I am worthy.”
- “I do not have to repeat the past.”
- “I can let go of anger.”
- “I will live in gratitude.”
- “Every day is a gift.”
- “I can live joyfully.”
Think about old routines you want to let go of and start a new routine, like exercising, cooking more often, or volunteering. This is your time to consider who you want to be and act on it. But be patient and gentle with yourself.
You may not have a powerful insight during each ketamine treatment, or if you do, it may slip away before you can write it down or discuss it. Remember that you’re in a process. You may set goals that you don’t achieve in the timeframe you were hoping for, or you may lose motivation to work on something that was important to you for a while. The important thing is that you’re working on yourself and the ketamine is there to help you, and so are we.
